Christmas Flutter Book Workshop Afternoon

Sunday 13th December 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Westridge Studios Highclere, RG20 9QS
A flutter book, is a simple book structure similar to a concertina or accordion fold book, created using only paper and glue. It’s name comes from the way the pages flutter back into place when you pull them away from the spine. It’s fun to make and use, and always earns gasps when I demonstrate how it opens at markets. This book would make a lovely Gift and we will be using Christmas covers to help us get into the Festive spirit.

A flutter book, is a simple book structure similar to a concertina or accordion fold book, created using only paper and glue. It’s name comes from the way the pages flutter back into place when you pull them away from the spine. Once complete a flutter book has a cover and pages that can be opened and turned like a normal book, however all of the pages are connected and can be pulled away from the spine to make a continuous row of pages, making it perfect for artists wanting to show the development of their work or graphic novelists, as well as more traditional uses. It’s fun to make and use, and always earns gasps when I demonstrate how it opens at markets.
During this work shop you will be introduced to the basic tools of bookbinding and learn some of the fundamental techniques used by binders all over the world. Measuring, folding, cutting, trimming and handling glue. We will talk about the different types of paper and the importance of paper grain in binding, and you will go away with a wonderful Flutter Book, a set of instructions so that you can make more at home and hopefully a desire to learn more about this fascinating craft.
